Convert PDF to PDF/A

Convert a PDF into the PDF/A archival format intended for long-term storage and reliable future readability.

This produces a best-effort PDF/A-2b conversion (fonts embedded, colors converted, archival metadata added). We do not run an independent conformance validator, so this is not a certified PDF/A-1a pass.

Convert a PDF into PDF/A, the ISO standard for long-term archival, using Ghostscript's PDF/A conversion mode. This produces a PDF/A-2b (best-effort) file — fonts embedded, colors converted, and archival metadata added — but we do not run an independent conformance validator, so we do not claim full, verified PDF/A-1a compliance.

What PDF/A is for

PDF/A is the ISO archiving version of PDF. It must contain everything needed to display it in decades: all fonts embedded, device-independent colour and no external dependencies. Courts, government archives and some universities require it.

Fileixa produces a PDF/A-2b file with Ghostscript: fonts embedded, colours converted and the required metadata added. We do not run a formal conformance validator, so if a strict archive rejects the file, check it with a validator such as veraPDF.

How to use this tool

  1. Upload the PDF you want to archive.
  2. We convert it to PDF/A-2b using Ghostscript.
  3. Download the archival-format PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is the output guaranteed to be fully PDF/A compliant?

It is a best-effort PDF/A-2b conversion (fonts embedded, color-converted, archival metadata added); we do not run a separate conformance validator, so treat it as a strong approximation, not a certified pass.

Why would I want PDF/A instead of a regular PDF?

PDF/A embeds everything the file needs to render identically decades from now, which regular PDFs don't guarantee — useful for legal, government, and long-term records.
