Compress PDF to 500KB

Reduce a PDF to under 500 KB for admissions, insurance and tender portals. Multi-page scans usually stay readable at this size; lossless compression is tried first.

School admissions, insurance claims, rental applications and tender portals often cap uploads at 500 KB. At this size a signed contract or a claim form with a few photos can usually be sent without visible loss: around three to six scanned pages stay readable, and most PDFs created from Word or Excel fit with lossless compression alone. Upload the file and Fileixa keeps the lossless result whenever it is under 500 KB, so text stays selectable; heavier files are turned into page images at falling resolution, step by step, until they fit.

When 500 KB is required

Many portals for tenders, insurance claims and school admissions accept files up to 500 KB. That is enough for a typical multi-page text document, or around three to six scanned pages at readable quality.

How the target size is reached

First the PDF is recompressed losslessly, which keeps text selectable and images untouched. If that already fits, you are done with no loss of quality. If not, the pages are turned into compressed images at progressively lower resolution and quality until the file fits, and the smallest version that fits is kept.

That second step is lossy: text in the result is no longer selectable, and fine print gets softer as the target shrinks. The tool always reports whether the target was reached; if even the strongest pass cannot fit, you get the smallest file it could make, labelled as a miss rather than passed off as a success.

How to use this tool

  1. Upload the PDF, for example a contract, claim form or application pack.
  2. Lossless compression runs first; if the file is still above 500 KB, pages are turned into images at gradually lower resolution.
  3. Download the file under 500 KB. If it had to be rasterised, the result says so.

Frequently asked questions

My PDF has photos of damage for an insurance claim. Will they still be clear?

At 500 KB, a handful of photos usually stays clear enough to show what happened. If you have many photos, split them into two uploads, or put only the key ones in the PDF.

Why is my Word-made PDF over 500 KB?

Usually because of embedded fonts or a large logo or picture. Lossless compression often fixes that without changing how the document looks.
